Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra: Hymn of Praise

‘Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!’ Mendelssohn’s inspirational Symphony No 2, Lobgesang(Hymn of Praise), is a monumental work for orchestra, choir and vocal soloists. Written to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg, it was premièred in St Thomas’ Leipzig in 1840, the same church where JS Bach spent the crowning years of his career. Rich in orchestral, choral and cultural traditions – Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 was another influence – Mendelssohn’s great, celebratory symphony is a grand and enthralling experience.

It’s hard to overestimate the influence of Weber’s Romantic opera Der Freischütz (in our own time, it inspired Tom Waits’ music theatre work The Black Rider). A morality tale loaded with eerie Gothic touches and heavy doses of the supernatural, Der Freischütz mixes simple and charming melodies with dazzling and imaginative orchestration. This concert showcases some of the highlights.

Conductor: Johannes Fritzsch
Starring: Lorina Gore, Stacey Alleaume, Paul O’Neill and TSO Chorus.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Hänsel und Gretel

Grimm’s famous fairy tale is richly re-imagined in Engelbert Humperdinck’s operatic version, first performed in Weimar in 1893. Humperdinck fell under the spell of Wagner while assisting him at Bayreuth and his influence wafts through the music, though he manages to express the best elements of Wagnerian style on a human level.

This is a story of real people; real children who wander into a magical domain where angels protect them from moral danger and they return happily to their parents embrace. Humperdinck’s memorable, simple melodies have the directness of folksongs. His beautiful score glows with human warmth and spirituality in numbers like the Evening Prayer sung by the children as they fall asleep in the forest.

This concert features surtitles.

Conductor: Sir Andrew Davis
Hansel: Elizabeth DeShong
Gretel: Laura Wilde
Sandman/Dew Fairy: Stacey Alleaume
